Las Vegas man hospitalized after giant wave crashes into him
Laguna Beach, CA — Family of a Las Vegas man says he is in a California hospital after a 20 to 30 foot wave crashed into him while he was videotaping a couple’s engagement.
The accident reportedly happened last Saturday near the Montage Hotel in Laguna Beach, breaking Sam Arafa’s leg in three parts.
His teenage son, Karim, said he was with him when the wave struck. “I could have lost my dad. I can’t get it out of my head, ya know,” he told Action News during a Skype interview on Sunday night. “I saw that his leg was broken. [His leg was] flopping like a fish in the water and there was blood everywhere [and] it was a really horrifying site.”
Karim said he struggled to get his father out of the water, even with the groom’s help. The Laguna Beach Lifeguard confirmed that their team helped in the rescue. Karim told us he was briefly hospitalized, too, with cuts and scrapes. He said there weren’t any warning signs posted at the beach.
Karim said his father will need a couple more surgeries before they can return to their home in Summerlin.
Sam reportedly lost his $ 4,000 video camera in the accident. His family says he has limited health insurance. They’ve set up a GoFundMe page where donations can be accepted.
